My circadian rhythm has retired indefinitely. I no longer have a concept of bedtime vs. awake time, and I have started the bad habit of multiple power-naps throughout the day, which only perpetuates the cycle. This is problematic when you work in an office. I have difficulty sleeping with my eyes open.
I had no idea that something as simple as changing the clocks by an hour would matter this much.
How does one go about stopping daylight savings time? I know there are a few places who decided, “Fuck it. Now it’s getting dark at a different time. It’s called Living On Earth. Get over it.”
Who did they call to make this happen? Who votes on this? SOMEONE TELL ME.
I don’t know anyone who likes DST. For the next week, everyone I know will say something to the effect of, “Man, my clock is off.”
No one ever explained DST to me. I think one of my elementary teachers said, “Something about farmers and sunlight, or something.” In truth, some farmers feel inconvenienced by the time change, as they are awake with the sun regardless of the time, but many of their customers observe DST.
My coworker said that there are more suicides and more car accidents during this time of the year. I decided to look into this, and she’s right. People with heart conditions are also at a higher risk.
A lot of people sort of scoff at those who get degrees in media and marketing, citing that they’re “worthless” degrees, and sometimes I think they’re right (Like when I’m at a job interview and my interviewer believes that I have no practical skills whatsoever, so I say something like, “Um… I know… Photoshop?”)
I do have a few takeaways from my undergrad years studying the ill effects of mass advertising. Question conformity. If “everyone” is doing it, should they be? Tradition does not equal success.
I’m not claiming that Daylight Savings Time is a conspiracy to get rid of sick people, but if the evidence suggests it’s bad for us, why are we still doing it?
Perhaps it’s not the time that needs to change, but our schedules. Better to wear slippers than carpet the world.
