PHOTOS

Everyone, you’re getting a little carried away with the Picnik and the overly-digitized photos from your phones. It makes you look like a hipster when you place fake “vintage” filters over your already-interesting (or otherwise) photos. This week, I thought I’d focus on a couple of photos that I did without any fake, photoshopped interruptions. Yes, with a little creativity, you can make something worth sharing. Below are two techniques to create your own “filters,” without making your subjects look like something from 1864. Or a gay bar.

1. Lady Liberty through the coin-operated binoculars.

Everyone has a photo of The Statue of Liberty where they’re pretending to hold her in their hands, or some otherwise cliched thing. I wanted to do something that I haven’t seen before, so I took a photo through the coin-operated binoculars at the edge of the park. My companion was convinced this wouldn’t turn out, but I’m happy with it.

2. Z through the Kaleidoscope.

My dad showed me this technique when I was a kid. All you need is one of those tiny little plastic telescopes that have the “Kaledoscope“-styled glass. Ours was a McDonald’s toy or something. You probably have one in your parent’s basement. It’s a challenge to focus, but it still looks cool.

Stewie said it best, “Every hot girl with a digital camera thinks she’s a photographer.” I don’t think I’m the best at taking photos, but I like it. If you’re going to document your life, why not highlight the best aspects of it?

I don’t care if photography is a new hobby of yours, or if you don’t have the nicest equipment. Go ahead and experiment, but try something a little out-of-the box. I don’t want to see any more of your thoughtless, botched Piknic jobs. Show us something worth displaying!

putting an old filter in front of your lens works a treat, or taking a photo through the peep hole of another camera is interesting. i like your blog
